We have been having so much fun in our backyard! When we bought the place we were under the assumption that most of the property in the back was unusalable wetland/swamp. It was so covered in blackberries and debris that we couldn't really check it out. We put on rubber boots and tried to tromp around and we started to see some potential if you could just make it over the swampy part. Slowly we've been clearing brush and blackberries. Here are some before pictures:
Come to find out the "swamp" is actually running water, more like a creek. We don't know if it'll stay wet over the summer, but we are keeping our fingers crossed. We've been clearing it out and even digging out a bit of a pond- which is actually attracting ducks and frogs. Adam built a bridge over the water and we've been clearing some trails on the other side. Here are some after photos:
There is much, much, much more work to be done, but it is exciting to be blazing trails on your own property and encouraging wildlife. We're also finding garbage like old tires and things that we need to deal with. I'm loving the way these skunk cabbage look right now. Hoping for some more sunny days soon!
