Flora's Celebration
This is one of the Varma's helpers, Flora. She has been working for the Varmas for at least 14 years and she is a wonderful person and an amazing cook. She works hard and is up feeding the kids breakfast before we arrive and brings us coffee every morning. She cooks and cleans up and supervises the kids after school and makes sure they read for half an hour before bed. She has raised all the boys since they were babies. I wish I could say shes "part of the family" but it doesn't really feel that way. I don't want to elaborate much on here, but the culture of having helpers (which is very very common in Hong Kong) is something I don't like about Hong Kong.
From what I understand, about 8 years ago Flora took a year off to have a baby in India. She has a son and a husband in India that she sees once a year. She likes to celebrate her son's birthday so she invited us to an Indian restaurant on Sunday in honor of her son's birthday. It was great to see her on a day off and in her element, surrounded by friends.
